Korean: About Verb 동사 + 아/어요, 해요

Use 아요 if vowel is ㅏ,ㅗ. Use 어요 if vowel is other than ㅏ,ㅗ.
해요 is for 하다.

아/어요, 해요

Korean culture places a lot of importance on the respect of elders and inferiors, and this is also reflected in the conversation. Therefore, there are words of respect and humility in Korean, which must be used according to the occasion.
You have to use them according to the occasion, and such terms as 아/어요 and해요 are used in everyday life (on informal occasions) as a courtesy, and can be used when talking to elders or people you don't know very well.

Before I introduce 아/어요,해요, let's explain stem (the core of the word).

The prototypes of verbs and adjectives in the Korean language are composed as follows.

stem + 다

So, what remains after removing 다 from a prototypical verb or adjective is the stem, which represents the most important part of a word.

let's move on to the usage of 아/어요,해요. The structure will be
① verb's stem + 아요
가다(go) -> 가요

② verb's stem + 어요
만들다(make) -> 만들어요

③ 하다 -> 해요
공부하다(study) -> 공부해요

For ① and ②, to determine which one to use based on the vowel of word stem.

Use 아요 if vowel is ㅏ,ㅗ

가다 ---> 가요
  • 가다(go), vowel is ㅏ

가+ 아요 = 가아요 -> 가요
ㅏ아 will be merged as 아

알다 ---> 알아요
  • 알다(know), vowel is ㅏ

알 + 아요 = 알아요

보다 ---> 봐요
  • 보다(see), vowel is ㅗ

보 + 아요 = 봐요
보아 will be merged as 봐

놀다 ---> 놀아요
  • 놀다(play), vowel is ㅗ

놀 + 아요 = 놀아요

Use 어요 if vowel is other than ㅏ,ㅗ

주다 ---> 주어요, 줘요
  • 주다(give), vowel is ㅜ

주 + 어요 = 주어요 or 줘요

만들다 ---> 만들어요
  • 만들다(make), vowel is ㅡ

만들 + 어요 = 만들어요

마시다 ---> 마셔요, 마시어요
  • 마시다(drink), vowel is ㅣ

마시 + 어요 = 마시어요 or 마셔요

Use 해요 if the verb is 하다

요리하다 ---> 요리해요

요리하다(cook)
요리하 -> 요리해요

걱정하다 ---> 걱정해요

걱정하다(worry) 걱정하 -> 걱정해요

사랑하다 ---> 사랑해요

사랑하다(love)
사랑하 -> 사랑해요
